Search Engine Optimization

weeks to achieve results. A short primer on search engine optimization is below, followed by some advanced
options that can be used to speed up the process and
improve your placement.
SEO Basics
The following list gives you a rough
idea of the factors that search
engines use to rank your website, in
order of importance:
- Link Density: Most search
engines see links to a website as a
validation of that site. You can
greatly improve your rankings by
increasing the number of
high-quality sites that link to your
website.
- Site Popularity: The more
hits your website gets, the higher
your ranking becomes on major search
engines.
- Title Tag: This is what
appears in the blue area over the
website. Many search engines use
this title as the way to list your
website so it should be informative
with the main keyword close to the
beginning.
- Description and Keyword Meta Tags: Keyword
meta-tags are quickly becoming
obsolete due to abuse but
description tags are still
important. To view your meta-tags,
open your website and use the
browser navigation to choose
View>Source. Near the top of the
code, you’ll see the text
“<meta-name=keywords” followed by
several words that search engines
will use to help people find your
site. Under that, you should see the
text “meta-name=description” with a
description of your site that search
engines will also use. To prevent
being rejected by search engines,
description meta–tags should be less
than 150 characters long and keyword
meta-tags should not be more than
250 characters. Upper and lower case
does not matter with meta-tags so
only the first word and proper nouns
should be capitalized.
- Keyword Density and Placement: The number of times
specific keywords appear on a page
and how close they appear to the top
of the page.

that appear above and to the
right-hand side of its regular
results. Google's self-service
AdWords program charges an
activation fee and a per-click
charge based on your selected terms.
Google also distributes its ads to
other search engines. An

Yahoo Local Featured Listings
Yahoo lets you target local
customers for an annual fee.
